From February 29th to March 2nd at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas retailers, brand marketers and over 600 suppliers presented and reviewed the future of the retail industry. According to the good folks at GlobalShop it’s the world’s largest annual trade show and conference dedicated to store design, visual merchandising, and shopper marketing. If you didn’t get a chance to stop by the Vanguard Protex Global booth to check out the newest offerings, here is your recap:
Shopper marketing professionals from various industries showed off their plans for 2012. VPG was amidst the action with the new Pivot and G5 tablet solutions on display for event attendees to check out. With the imminent release of the new iPad (or iPad3 or iPadHD if you prefer) on the horizon the show floor was abuzz with tablet talk. The new iPad contains 4G speeds, Quad-Core graphics and Retina display. How does Apple keep coming up with new technology that I don’t even know I want!?
Much like smartphones, one of the greatest features of the tablet is the ability to switch from portrait view to landscape view in just a few seconds. Thank goodness the Pivot and G5 are here! VPG is ready to assist in highlighting this page orientation feature of tablets in the retail environment (smartphone options also available). The Pivot is a fixed mechanical security solution offering various fixture installation options while the G5 tablet charging solution can protect and power all tablets up to twenty-four volts. For more information on either of these tablet solutions contact VPG today! Dial toll free at 1-877-477-4874 to speak with an experienced and professional VPG representative. How can we help you come up with a security solution that you don’t even know you want yet?

You don’t have to look far to find a tablet device pressed into service in some interesting locations. At the library? Sure. In a restaurant? You bet. In the hospital? Fits right in there, too.
The tablet is such a versatile device that it has quickly transcended the divide between consumer and commercial applications. And speaking of applications, you can credit the Apps for expediting such a swift transition. Whether used as a reference tool for quick look ups or selecting a wine to compliment your meal, Apps are paving the way for tablets to enter more areas of our daily life…and to make things more convenient for us, too. Think of it, the iPad has sped into our lives. Don’t have an iPad? That’s fine, but I’ll bet you know more than a few folks who do. But it’s not just iPads, right? Now there are more entrants to the category, more devices, more options and more features. And one can only imagine what the future may hold.
Where have you seen an iPad recently used in a manner that caught you by surprise? Do you think the Apps of today have made things more convenient for you?

The recent announcement by Apple introducing the cloud based data storage service iCloud marks another milestone in the evolution of mobile devices. Mobile devices? Yes, that’s what I said, mobile devices! Here’s why.
For as long as we can remember, the computer has served as our information hub. Of significant importance is the fact that until recently, only laptops afforded to the masses the ability to take their information hub with them; freeing them from the shackles of a desk and power outlet. But today it’s a different story. The laptop is bowing to the smartphone which, in turn, is winking at the tablet that is all the time smirking at the both of them! Why? Because the tablet is fast becoming the preferred portable vehicle of choice for accessing and manipulating our data from wherever we may be! Given the fact that the cloud, in this case the iCloud , promises to provide us with access to all of our data through the use of a sleek mobile device from anywhere on the earth, wouldn’t you figure that folks will gravitate towards purchasing a mobile device?
So, there you have it. That is why the iCloud is going to bring about another surge in the growth of sales of mobile devices. If you are a retailer, you best be prepared for what is about to come your way. This cloud brings with it a storm of sales! Will you be ready?

In a recent article (pdf) in Retail Solutions Online, Frank Mayer associate Andrew Govek outlines his view into the keys to securing display iPads and tablets in retail environments.
He states, “Securing vulnerable electronics at retail removes a ripe source of temptation. At the same time, retailers must balance the need for secure merchandising against the desire for customers to experience products in authentic ways. Safely displaying electronics, especially the latest drivers of in-store traffic, requires consideration and planning.”
Govek goes on to outline his two simple guidelines to follow when securing tablets. They are:
1. Alter the product as little as possible
2. Secure the product used for demonstration in the most unobtrusive and purposeful way
This may seem easy at first but with tablets having a minimalist form factor, it can be hard to secure the device without detracting from it’s attractive design. But an iPad and tablet retail security solution from Vanguard does just that.
Our field-proven VoltTM solution has been safely securing electronics products for years, with the largest selection of sleek display pedestal options available today. If you want to safely display your iPads and tablets for customers to explore, contact us today to learn more about our solutions. Or call 877-477-4874.

Screen shot of Proloquo2 App for the iPad
Everyday I discover new ways the iPad is infusing our lives with new ways to communicate with each other.
One of these is the augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) app Proloquo2Go, which I learned about from an article in USA Today last week. Upon reading the article, I had to learn more about it.
The company describes Proloquo2Go as an app that “…provides a full-featured communication solution for people who have difficulty speaking. It brings natural sounding text-to-speech voices, close to 8000 up-to-date symbols, powerful automatic conjugations, a large default vocabulary, full expandability and extreme ease of use to the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.”
The app allows users to communicate with others upon touching representative icon images on the screen to form sentences. The app then speaks the sentences out loud via the device speaker.
Proloquo2 has a default vocabulary of more than 7,000 words and phrases. Users can add to this built-in database by typing new words as needed. Additionally, sentences are stored for later use as needed.
There quite a few reasons someone would have trouble speaking, from autism spectrum disorders in children to ALS and stroke illnesses in adults. This app has already helped a lot of people greatly improve their ability their communicate, which in turn improves their lives. And that is an incredible thing.
What about you? Have you discovered an app that’s forging new frontiers in personal communication?
