It was reported in the Wall Street Journal yesterday that RIM will most likely be launching its new tablet computer (aka BlackPad) early next week at it’s developer conference. This comes on the heels of Samsung’s inauguration of their Galaxy Tab earlier this month.
It’s safe to say that the “media tablet” is now an established product of which consumer demand will only grow exponentially in the next couple years. In fact IDC projects that the number of units to ship in 2014 will be around 46 million. That’s up from a total 7.6 million units projected to ship this year.
These devices are fulfilling the need for a dedicated multi-media consumption device, as opposed to a task-performing personal computer. It makes sense as our channels for communicating and media guzzling get more and more intertwined.
CE manufacturers see the dollar signs and are gearing up to deliver new tablet products as quickly as they can make them. It’ll be interesting to see which products hit the mark, and which ones fall short.
