Does the equipment drive the App or does the App drive the equipment?

Looking back to what now seems to be the dawn of time, we strain to remember when a mobile device did one thing and one thing only: complete a phone call.

As our nation’s first product manager for TDMA digital cellular service, I recall how excited I was when we launched ground breaking features marking a new era in cellular service.  Are you ready? Here they are:  Message Waiting Indicator and Caller ID!

Nowadays, it’s all about the Apps, baby, thanks to the evolving Smartphone platforms and the robust networks developed by the carriers.  I guess that helps to explain why Garmin has yet again introduced a mobile phone. The Garminfone launched earlier this month and is available through T-Mobile, USA.

The Garminfone, an Android-powered smartphone, uniquely leverages their now indispensible GPS service by providing additional functionality in a mobile device: You can now use a GPS device to make a phone call.  A new era , indeed. So, I ask you does the equipment drive the app or does the app drive the equipment.  Hmmm?
